Information
on the Situation in Van in the Aftermath of the Earthquake
October 2011
- In the aftermath
of the earthquake, the Turkish authorities are taking measures in order
to reach all who are in need of assistance. In any disaster and destruction
on this scale the priority is search and rescue efforts and the delivery
of assistance can be challenging.
- Assistance directed
to Van is increasing day by day and is going to strengthen as deliveries
arrive. Please be assured that relief assistance is provided on an equal
basis regardless of nationality or status with authorities and UNHCR.
- UNHCR Office in
Van remains operational and works in close coordination with the local
authorities and NGOs to facilitate delivery of assistance from aid agencies
through assigned structures to those who are affected.
- There are currently
three assistance distribution points established in Van. You can get
the most updated information from UNHCR Van or HRDF Van on these locations.
- During this period,
it is essential that you avoid spontaneous
departures from Van. Leaving Van without permission will make
your status illegal and may create further problems for you in future.
- GDS and local authorities
in Van are working on a plan to facilitate transfer of those whose situation
requires a re-location out of Van. If you think that your personal circumstances
do not allow you to stay in Van, you can bring this to the attention
of authorities.
- UNHCR Office in
Van, in coordination with local Foreigners Department, will provide
you detailed information on the re-location arrangements. All re-locations
will be done on a voluntary basis, and those who want to remain in Van
will be allowed to do so.
- In case you do want
to relocate, it is very important that you share the correct information
concerning your family members / relatives in other cities. Inaccurate
information may cause further problems for you in future.
- Even if you do
not have family members in other cities, you will be authorised to re-locate
to another city if you are unable to stay in Van due to the current
situation.
- Please note that,
the cities you will be transferred to are going to be your new satellite
cities, i.e. you will not return back to Van.
- Please note that
although UNHCR is coordinating with central and local authorities for
the extension of services and assistance in your new satellite cities,
there is no guarantee that you will receive assistance in these
new cities.
- Refugee Status Determination
and Resettlement interviews at UNHCR Van are currently on hold. However,
the situation may change in the coming weeks. UNHCR will get into touch
with you accordingly. Please ensure that your contact information with
UNHCR is accurate and inform UNHCR of any changes.
- Please keep UNHCR
up to date about your whereabouts and protection concerns through
0533 646 0798. You can communicate in Turkish, Farsi and English.
